హైదరాబాద్ : ప్రత్యేక తెలంగాణ రాలేదన్న మనస్తాపంతో ఉస్మానియా యూనివర్శిటీలో మరో విద్యార్థి ఆత్మహత్యకు పాల్పడ్డాడు. వర్శిటీలో ఎమ్మెస్సీ చదువుతున్న వేణుగోపాల్ రెడ్డి అనే విద్యార్ధి ఈ అఘాయిత్యానికి పాల్చడ్డాడు. క్యాంపస్ లోని ఠాగూర్ ఆడిటోరియం సమీపంలో ఒంటిపై కిరోసిన్ పోసుకోని నిప్పుంటించుకోని ఆత్మహత్యకు పాల్పడినట్లు తెలుస్తోంది. వేణుగోపాల్ దగ్థమవుతుండటాన్ని వర్శిటీకీ చెందిన ప్రొఫెసర్ ఒకరు గుర్తించడంతో ఈ వార్త దావానంలా వ్యాపించింది. దీంతో వర్శిటీలో మళ్లీ ఉద్రిక్త పరిస్థితి నెలకొంది. అంతకుముందు వేణుగోపాల్ సూసైడ్ నోట్ ను కూడా రాసాడు. తెలంగాణ ఏర్పాటులో జరుగుతున్న జాప్యానికి నిరసనగా, మనస్తాపంతో తాను ఆత్మహత్యకు పాల్పడినట్లు వేణుగోపాల్ లేఖలో పేర్కొన్నాడు. సోనియా ఇప్పటికైనా స్పందించి తెలంగాణ ప్రకటించాలని నోట్ లో వేణుగోపాల్ కోరాడు. అయితే ఉస్మానియా యాజమాన్యం మంగళవారం నుండి విద్యార్ధులకు పరీక్షలు నిర్వహించేందుకు సమాయాత్తమవుతున్న తరుణంలో ఈ ఘటన చోటుచేసుకుంది.

Telangana row: Osmania university student commits suicide

HYDERABAD: Tension prevailed in the Osmania University campus on Tuesday as students of all varsities in the Telangana region boycotted examinations after one of them committed suicide over the delay in carving out a separate state from Andhra Pradesh.

Venugopal Reddy, an MCA student, set himself ablaze at Osmania University. His body was found in the campus early Tuesday, police said.

A suicide note left by Reddy said he was disappointed over the delay in formation of Telangana state and feared that it would not become a reality. He also appealed to Congress president Sonia Gandhi to help in formation of a separate state.

Reddy, a native of Nalgonda district, was a student of Lalita College of Engineering at Uppal in the city.

His suicide triggered protests at the campus with Joint Action Committee (JAC) of students and teachers staging a protest with the body on the campus. The JAC leaders were demanding that the government pay Rs.5 lakh compensation to his family.

JAC also gave a call for a two-day shutdown in Telangana and urged students across the region to boycott examinations.

Additional police forces rushed to the university, the nerve centre of the ongoing Telangana agitation.

The student's suicide came a day after JAC began a march to urge the central government to immediately initiate the process for formation of Telangana state. The 20-day march through the region will conclude with a public meeting in Warangal.

Meanwhile, protests also broke out at Kakatiya University in Warangal, Satavahana University in Karimnagar and Palamuru University in Mahabubnagar. Students boycotted examinations.

JAC had already given a call for two-day protest against the decision of the universities to conduct the examinations as per schedule. The examinations began Tuesday despite the appeal by JAC and political parties to conduct them only after completion of the courses.

The Telangana agitation, which began in November, affected teaching in all universities. Some student bodies have decided not to appear for examinations till the state is carved out.

Telangana political JAC formed

The Telangana JAC (Joint Action Committee) comprising various political and social organisations, including the ruling Congress, TRS, TDP, BJP, PRP, CPI (ML) New Democracy, employees, students, workers, teachers, NRI associations and others, today passed an unanimous resolution to continue its struggle till the formation of separate Telangana state. It demanded the Central Government to stick to its December 9 statement on Telangana and to start the Constitutional process for the purpose. It has urged the agitators particularly students not to resort to violence or commit suicide.
Addressing the first meeting of the Telangana JAC (which was formed yesterday night) at Kalinga Cultural Centre in Banjara Hills this afternoon, TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao appealed to Prime Minister to honour UPA’s `commitment’ of creating Telangana State.
“We shall continue the struggle to realise our legitimate demand,” Chandrasekhara Rao said.
Referring to the deployment of police forces in various universities in the region, the TRS leader demanded Union Home Minister P Chidambaram to take steps for withdrawal of forces and cases framed against the students. On hearing about police lathicharge at Osmania University, he warned the State Government saying that “We will be forced to go to the University if Chief Minister K Rosaiah do not order for immediate withdrawal of police forces.” Rao apprehended infiltration of `Rayalaseema goondas’ in the Telangana agitation to create violence.
Former minister and senior Telangana Congress leader K Jana Reddy asserted that there was no need to have any apprehensions on the formation of JAC comprising various political parties. He, however, stressed the need for maintaining unity to achieve the goal. “By seeing our unity, I am hopeful that the Central Government will definitely create separate Telangana state,” he said.
Former Assembly Speaker KR Suresh Reddy exuded confidence that the Centre would make another statement towards formation of Telangana state in view of ongoing agitation and the demand putforth by all political parties in the region.
Telangana ideologue Prof Jayashanker said the people of Telangana would wait if the Centre has fixed a timeframe for State formation. Chidambaram’s statement of having `wideranging consultations’ were already over for creation of Telangana state, he noted.
Senior TDP member Ch Rajeshwar Rao warned that the people of the region would not tolerate if the issue was further delayed.
Senior Congress leader and CWC member G Venkat Swamy, MLA R Damodar Reddy, BJP leader Ch Vidyasagar Rao, TDP MLA L Ramana, TDP leader and Siasat editor Zahed Ali Khan, PRP MLA Anil, former MP Ravindra Naik, MLC BV Mohan Reddy, CPI (ML) New Democracry leader Suryam, employees’ union leader Swamy Goud, POW leader V Sandhya, MRPS founder president Manda Krishna Madiga were among those who sought immediate formation of Telangana State.
Former TRS members Rahman, V Prakash, R Balakrishna and others who earlier differed with Chandrasekhara Rao also attended the meeting. Former ministers and Congress leaders G Chinna Reddy, T Jeevan Reddy, TDP MLAs P Srinivas Reddy, R Prakash Reddy and others also attended.
On this occasion, the JAC has decided to chalk out its future course of action tomorrow. It has authorised Professor Kodandaram to head the future committee meetings. A two-minutes silence was observed in memory of those died in the Telangana movement.
